Technical Workshop

A technical workshop will also be arranged for the benefit of participants. The idea behind is that our participants not just contribute to thermocon, but also gain something from this platform. It is our main goal that participants stay at GIKI is not just fun and memorable but also informative and beneficial for them. The workshop will be conducted by a professional from his field who will have complete command over the subject and by the end of workshop; he would not leave any doubts regarding the topic. Certificates will also be given to the participants attending the workshop to compliment their participation and interest.
Event Dates: 1st to 3rd Feb’13
Last Date to Register: 26th Jan’13

INDUSTRIAL Participation

Young Engineers like us always have a problem as to what we shall be expected in the industry, in an attempt to bridge this gap we shall have engineers from reputed industries around Pakistan give an insight to the role of engineers and the challenges they face day to day. Industries invited to present will be linked to HVAC, renewable energies and green technologies. We aim at giving our participants an opportunity where engineers in the industry shall share their first hand experiences helping us making choice for our future jobs easy.

External collaboration

In order that our platform gives a chance to everyone not only to participate in our event but also be a part of Thermocon as an organizer, we shall call upon the different chapters of ASHRAE Pakistan to submit a proposal of activities other than what we are organizing currently. This shall mean as external collaborators of Thermocon 13 they shall have similar responsibilities as the host team. The proposal needs to be forwarded to ASHRAE GIKI at ashrae.giki@gmail.com , the subject of which should be module proposal_(chapter name). The proposal should contain the following:
  • Module name
  • Description
  • Technical rules
  • Finances ( cost allocation including those of the logistics involved)
  • Target audience and expected participation
The technical committee shall review the proposals and upon acceptance of the proposal the chapter shall be external collaborators of Thermocon 13. This shall mean that they shall be responsible for the following:
  • Conducting the module with the help of our operations department
  • Liaison
  • Support activities like ( posters for the modules, online publicity and presentations as organizers )
In short the chapter will be the co-organizer of Thermocon 13. They shall be mentioned and given due recognition on all levels of our correspondence.
Note: A MOU shall be signed before everything becomes official.

First All Pakistan Research Symposium ’13:

For those of us who wish to pursue a post grad degree and involve ourselves in research, it is always worthwhile to know the vast array of research subjects that we may choose from and the work that has already been done in these fields. Unfortunately Pakistan lacks behind in research, in order to change this mindset of young engineers and promote research we shall be hosting a symposium in which graduate & post-graduate students, professors and researchers shall present their research. The symposium details will be shared in our newsletter and so will it be shared with ASHRAE international.

Call for Abstracts:
The abstract of your research should be mailed to ashrae.giki@gmail.combefore 15/1/2013.
Areas of Research:
Following are the areas of research that you may present at the symposium:
(1)   HVAC Systems
(2)   Refrigeration
(3)   Energy Conservation
(4)   Green Energy
(5)   Fluid Mechanics
(6)   Heat Transfer
(7)   Thermodynamics

Green Idea Challenge

The nations of the world and especially developing countries like Pakistan have been plundering the worlds natural reservoirs of fossil fuels with utter regard for the consequences their actions might have. With the world’s seemingly endless supply of resources dwindling, it is clear that soon we will no longer be able to rely so heavily on the bounties of the Earth with such impunity. According to a cautious appraisal, the fuel will run out from the world in few next decades. The natural gas is anticipated to vanish by 21 years from Pakistan and by 2042 from mines of rest of the world.
In this alarming situation, the development of alternate energy resources and energy efficient systems, maximized use of recycled products is desperately needed. Being students of Engineering, we can contribute towards the world’s future. You can think shrewdly, sagaciously and above all sensibly.
GREEN IDEA CHALLENGEGIC, is an opportunity for you to be able to make a difference and present your ideas that may have a positive influence not only on you but on the lives of those around you.
Why should I participate in GIC?
Young undergrads, like you, have many ideas and projects that address the current problems of energy crisis, pollution, but they never get them off the ground due to lack of capital. The GIC gives these ideas a chance to grow into entrepreneurial ventures by awarding substantial prize money to the team with the most innovative and feasible idea.

Who can participate?
The students from all engineering universities are eligible to apply. The students from mechanical engineering background are particularly encouraged to compete. The final year students can also bring their Final Year Projects in GIC.
Which sort of ideas can I bring to GIC?
We are looking for ideas that will not only encourage green energy or conservation but are also sustainable business models.
Look around, the problems we face every day are right there!! Now it’s up to YOU to be able to identify them and come up with a way to erase that problem. Remember all revolutions begin as small, simple ideas, and the idea to start the GREEN revolution just might be YOURS!!!
We are expecting you to give not only the basic notion but also how will it be advantageous if your idea is implemented. E.g. it may be something related with carbon credits, or it may be something as simple as to properly insulate homes from heat and cold to reduce its electricity and gas consumption. In such case, you may present expected results that how much percentage of electricity can be saved if your plan is implemented. Of course, we are not expecting here accuracy, but your calculations should be able to convey a trivial indication of cost -effectiveness of your system.
Categories:
Although there is no restriction, you may choose any of the following categories to work on:
(1)               Energy Efficient Systems:
To enhance the efficiency of any work producing or work consuming cycle is one of the basic tasks of an engineer. You can give your ideas to minimize the energy transfer losses. You may target at reducing the irreversibility .This is a titanic field asking for improvement.
 (2)               Use of Recyclable Products:
Now a days, it is not advisable to use drinking water at car washing stations ,it says in the paper. Similarly, you can prevent waste of potentially useful materials and reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials. Introduction of products that can be used again with little processing is the need of the day.
(3)               Environment Friendly Products:
Global warming, hole in ozone layer and increase in Carbon Dioxide Concentration are all stories of after the industrial revolution. The average temperature of the earth has gone up by 1.40F, the two-third of which took place after 1983.You can bring the economic systems about proper disposal of wastage of factories or can give innovative ideas about use of environment friendly products.
Report
You will have to submit a detailed report which should include what is your idea, how and why is it important, if it implemented what will be its results, with your team name and institute in the title via email (ashrae.giki@gmail.com) by 15th Jan 2013. Your report should consist of the following sections:
(i)                 Abstract:
Abstract of your report should precisely inform about theme of your idea in two or three sentences.
(ii)               Implementation:
This section should describe your plan in detail plus the possible ways and suitable sites for its implementation. You may also want to discuss the scientific theory working behind your idea.
(iii)             Statistics:
This portion of your report is supposed to give only a vague idea about the efficiency of your system or plan. You should briefly explain the economic benefit of your plan. The calculations which may be mathematical or graphical are not expected to be highly accurate but at least they are supposed to be making some correspondence with the actual results.
(iv)             Conclusion:
This final portion of your report should contain the ending comments. It should state any limitations of your plan.
Format of the GIC
Green Idea challenge is divided into two rounds:
Round 1:
On the first day of the event, your team will have a maximum of 15minutes (10 minutes presentation: 5 minutes Q&A) to present your green idea. We, of course, do not expect you to cover every aspect of your idea in Round1! You will be judged on the following elements in Round 1:
  • Idea
  • Reason behind choosing this plan
  • Financial feasibility
  • Presentation.
Round 2:
On the second day, the teams which have been shortlisted based upon the quality of ideas presented and their financial viability, will each be given 20 minutes to present their detailed plans which should include at least the following features:
  • Review
  • Technical details
  • Detailed financial viability ( show market / demand )
  • Communication strategy (marketing strategy )
  • Impact of idea if it is implemented
  • Benefits.
Be prepared for detailed questioning during this round by the judges and students especially regarding technical issues and implementation of the plan. Any trick or knavery is expected to be screwed. Best of Luck!!
